Apart, Together is a collection of photos from local photographers that reflects on the challenges our city faced in 2020.

2020 will be forever be remembered as a challenging year full of hardship, contrast, solidarity, and division. From the immediate impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic other the widespread protests against longstanding racial inequality, 2020 marked a definitive turning point in our city, our country, and the world.

As we sheltered in our homes and huddled around their phones and TVs, there were times that we felt—physically and ideologically—far, far apart from each other. Yet we adapted, slowly imperfectly, to a new reality born out of the necessity protect ourselves and our loved ones. We banded together in protest of institutional racism in the hope that future generation wouldn’t have to suffer the same injustices. We looked out for one another.

 

This collection of photos is a document to an unparalleled time, one that we will hopefully learn from together

Meet The Photographers

Harvey Pullings, II
A native of the south side communities of Chatham and Princeton Park, Harvey Pullings II is an independent filmmaker, photographer, and writer. A graduate of Columbia College Chicago, his thematic preferences in cinema are focused on perspectives of the “common man’s turmoil," the struggles of identity, the effects of a father's legacy on his children, as well as race relations and violence.
Christopher Mariano
Christopher Mariano is a Chicago native with an insatiable thirst for travel, connections, and new experiences. He works with a curious and creative approach to capture life in all its finest moments.
Colin Boyle
Colin Boyle is a born-and-bred Chicagoan. As a freelance visual storyteller, Boyle helped share the great work of My Block, My Hood, My City in 2020 through video and photographic work.
Chris Datskos
Chris Datskos is a Chicago-based, self-taught photographer focusing on urban and landscape scenes. While he was drawn to photography from a young age, Chris became an active photographer two years ago after finding inspiration in exploring Chicago and its historic and every-changing skyline.
Danielle Braun
Danielle has been taking photos for over ten years now and loves capturing the beauty of the moment. Chicago is her home and her primary inspiration and focus is the city that surrounds her.
Alex Qian
Alex Qian is a Chicago based photographer and video creator working in a variety of professional fields creating content. During the lockdowns in 2020, his attention and energy was focused on create something that had a significant impact locally - one that supported those facing difficulties due to COVID-19.
Paul Martin
Paul Martin is a British photographer who lives and works both in Chicago and the UK. He was in Chicago during the onset of COVID-19 and documented his experience of being a Brit in Chicago during this unusual time - through his photography, from pre-COVID February through to his very surreal experience flying back to the UK in May.
Khoa A. Dao
Khoa A. Dao is a documentary photographer based in Hyde Park. With a predilection for 35mm film for its tangibility and how it paints light, he documents Chicagoans confronting life with tenacity, whether that be while facing extraordinary situations or experiencing everyday moments.
