March Madness is one of the most exciting times of the year for not only sports fans, but admirers of competition in general. 64 different college basketball teams from all over the country compete for the National Champion Title in just under a three week period, with millions following along by cheering on their teams and filling out their brackets. What makes this tournament so unique and exhilarating from other series in sports is how truly unpredictable it is. The game-winning buzzer beaters, unforeseeable upsets and overall madness is what makes this tournament so special.
This year, we felt it was only right to join in on the fun and host our own March Madness-style tournament. We wanted to give local Chicago photographers the chance to compete against one another for the grand prize of an annual pass to 360 CHICAGO Observation Deck. Here's how it went…
We started off by announcing the tournament on social media and giving our followers five days to capture and post their best photo of our building using the hashtag #360BracketChallenge. During this time period, we had over 130 photo submissions and a great deal of photographers ready to compete.
Our next step was to create 4 different divisions and rank the photos #1 through #16 for a total of 64 photos in the tournament. Once we had the bracket arranged, we were ready to go.
In regular March Madness fashion, the round of 64 began on Thursday, March 17th with 32 different matchups between various talented photographers. We had thousands of poll votes, shares and messages from our followers who were supporting the photographers they were hoping to see advance.
As the first round concluded, we had a total of seven upsets that advanced to the second round after knocking out their higher-ranked opponents, which was pretty close to the 10 upsets that happened in the first round of the actual March Madness tournament going on.
On Monday, March 21st, we continued by holding the second round of 32 on our Instagram story. It was pretty tough seeing some pretty amazing photos get bounced so early, but then again… it was March.
The Sweet 16 was held on Thursday, March 24th where we saw even more heartbreaking losses from some of the best photographers Chicago has to offer, leaving us with eight photographers left.
The Elite Eight and Final Four were both nail-biting rounds as most of the matchups came straight down to the wire, and after 64 photos and 5 rounds, we were finally down to just two remaining photos.
The finals were quite interesting as the last photos standing were complete opposites of each other. @zaidiboy's photo portrayed a dark and gloomy atmosphere, showing a turbulent storm rolling off of Lake Michigan with massive waves bound to strike the Windy City. @filoricanadventures photo depicted a much lighter feel, showing a breathtaking sunset over Chicago while featuring some amazing reflections off the lake. It all came down to this, and with thousands of votes casted on the final round, @zaidiboy ended up as the champion of the 2022 #360BracketChallenge.
It's safe to say the #360BracketChallenge was a success as we were able to highlight so many amazing local photographers from the Chicago community. We had so much fun not only hosting this tournament but also following along to see so many people voting, sharing and commenting on all of these incredible photos. Thanks to everybody who participated, we'll see you next March!
875 N Michigan Ave, formerly the John Hancock Center, has reached a new naming rights agreement with Omega SA. The famous Swiss watchmaker, which has a flagship store directly below the Hancock on Michigan Avenue, plans to give the world famous tower a significant facelift. A giant fully-functional clocktower will be constructed over a 4-year period at the top of the tower, making the new Omega Center the 2nd-tallest working clocktower in the world. Construction is not expected to affect residential floors, and a thrill element in collaboration with 360 CHICAGO Observation Deck is also in the works.
Early diagrams of the future Omega Center
Representatives from Omega could not be reached for comment, but one building engineer speculated that impending daylight saving time legislation may have sealed the deal. "At least we won't have to get up there to set the damn thing forward and back twice a year," he said.
The clocktower is another in a long line of renovations to the historic skyscraper, including 360 CHICAGO Observation Deck's TILT, a moving thrill ride which opened to the public in 2014. Omega Center promises to be another iconic element of one of America's most distinctive skylines.
Never.
But while, you're here...

Ok, fine, it’s only sometimes as bad as people say. Read this guide, take our advice, and you’ll be more than prepared for whatever our city’s unpredictable weather decides to throw your way.
You've probably heard people say that if you don’t like the weather in Chicago, wait 15 minutes. Well, this is absolutely true, and we can prove it! When it comes to weather, we’ve seen it all from 94 floors above the city at 360 CHICAGO Observation Deck. And now, we're here to share everything you need to know about visiting our beautiful, cold, windy, city.
First things first...
Being located close to Lake Michigan means getting used to its ever-changing weather patterns. Ask any Chicagoan: the weather by the lake is significantly different than in more inland neighborhoods in several ways:
Chicago Weather by Season
You can expect the first snow of the year to come sometime in November, although it occasionally arrives earlier. It's the one time all year where Chicagoans might be exited to see the cold white stuff. Then we realize there are six more months of it ahead and our brief moment of childlike joy is replaced with existential dread.
If, while being pelted in the face with snow and ice, you want to say it's still Fall just because it isn't December 22nd, be our guest. But you're only lying to yourself.
This is usually when Chicago is at its coldest and snowiest. Ever heard of a Polar Vortex? Those happen during Winter II. Wear layers and try not to stay outside for too long. Come upstairs for a beer or coffee and hibernate like the rest of us.
Lake Michigan is also known to freeze over during this second, more intense phase of winter. The ice may look sturdy, but you should never try to walk on it for... reasons.
Also known as Foggy Season. Commonly referred to as “Spring” elsewhere in the country, this dreary period brings Chicago's most grey and gloomy weather. Plenty of rain, fog, and overcast skies dominate the post-winter, pre-spring climate.
If you want to see what the Chicago skyline looks like above the clouds, this is the time of year when you just might catch some low fog drifting off the lake. Seeing it from the 94th floor is a sight to behold.
Every March, there's an unseasonably warm day that unfairly teases Chicagoans into thinking spring has arrived. It has not. A short time after this spring mirage, temperatures return to the norm and we go back to huddling under the warming lamps on the CTA like weird little bugs.
An actual Chicago weather forecast... in March
If you haven't figured it out by now, let us be very clear: The shoulder months don't really exist in Chicago. Our short spring season usually occurs for a couple weeks right before summer. We're defining spring as any time where there is a week or more of temperatures above 65 degrees.
This is the time of year when it's finally comfortable enough to wear shorts, although real Chicagoans start wearing shorts the first time it gets above freezing.
Chicago summer is... amazing. Our city’s weather somewhat justifiably gets a bad rep (see above), but if you get a chance to visit in the summer, don’t hesitate. Book those tickets right now!
Summer in Chicago is so pleasant it gives Chicagoans Winter Amnesia. The city’s 24 beaches are full from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Play volleyball, ride your bike, or just catch some rays next to Lake Michigan. It could be 99° and still feel pleasant thanks to the wind.
Oak Street Beach, as seen from 360 CHICAGO
The other mini shoulder month in Chicago lasts barely long enough for you to finish your Pumpkin Spice Latte. You'll no doubt be torn between wearing short sleeves or your winter coat, probably within a three-day period. On the bright side, watching the leaves change colors from the 94th floor is beautiful.
As a general rule, the weather on Halloween is miserable. There’s no particular rhyme or reason for it, but it’s either going to be cold or rainy. You’re going to need some sort of coat. Unless you are an adult in Wrigleyville. Alcohol is your coat.
You can see all of our city's crazy, beautiful weather from 1,030 feet above Chicago at 360 CHICAGO Observation Deck. Sometimes in the span of 15 minutes.

360 CHICAGO Observation Deck looks out directly over our city's most cherished natural resource: Lake Michigan. From the 94th floor, we watch it freeze every winter and crowd with Chicago boaters every summer. We see water levels rise and fall. We see it illuminated with the reflection from Navy Pier's fireworks. We watch steam rising from its surface during extreme cold snaps. Lake Michigan is a living, breathing, vital part of our city. During Earth Month, we want to do what we can to preserve the Lake for generations to come.
All month long, we're partnering with the Alliance for the Great Lakes to provide you with an overview of the threats to the Great Lakes and give you a multitude of ways to contribute. From pollution and plastics to invasive species, our beloved Lakes are at risk. Luckily, there are a few easy ways you can help preserve them.
